The city’s tree canopy has declined in the past 10 years.
The researchers published their findings in Nature magazine in November.
The complex, called The Standard, will include 283 apartment units.
The revised plans call for trees to be trimmed every four to five years.
The “tree trimming” project was an attempt to increase safety measures for pilots flying at night, the airport's manager said.
One resident called the removal of over 250 trees as a "slaughter" of the tree canopy.
The council plans to host a public forum for residents to express concerns with the ordinance.
Some 125 trees have been cut down due to construction projects.
