What to watch for Maryland: Can they prove that this season is different?

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Maryland has been dominated by three teams that all happen to be in their division: Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State. Since joining the conference, the Terrapins have a combined 3-21 record against these three teams and no wins have come against Ohio State.

This season looked as if it might be different for Maryland, starting out 6-2 with only two close losses to Michigan and Purdue. However following Taulia Tagovailoa’s return from injury, the team has become completely stagnant on offense. They put up 10 points against Wisconsin in week nine and was embarrassingly shutout by Penn State last week in State College.

If the Terps want to prove they have taken a step forward as a program this year, they need to show they are not going to be a pushover to the Big Ten powers anymore. Now, beating Ohio State is no easy task, as shown by their record, but they need to put up a better fight than they did last week.

What to watch for Ohio State: Are they the class of the Big Ten?

Ohio State dominated the Big Ten for the past eight years, winning five conference championships, making four College Football Playoff appearances and winning the national championship in 2014, the last Big Ten team to do so. Last year, their 8-year winning streak against their arch-rival Michigan came to an end as the Wolverines defeated the Buckeyes 42-27. The loss ended Ohio State’s chances at the Big Ten championship and the College Football Playoff.

This season, both teams are undefeated so far and are awaiting a matchup in Columbus next week. The winner will represent the Big Ten East in the Big Ten championship game. Michigan narrowly defeated Maryland in Ann Arbor in week four. If the Buckeyes can handedly defeat Maryland in College Park, it should give them plenty of confidence ahead of Michigan next week. Both teams have national championship aspirations this season.
