A man died early Sunday morning after he was caught in a second-floor room in a house fire on the 5900 block of Riggs Road in Hyattsville, according to tweets from the Prince George’s County Fire Department.
Firefighters from Montgomery County, Bunker Hill, Chillum and Hyattsville arrived on the scene around 5:30 a.m. The victim was found in a second-floor room at 5:43 a.m., county fire department spokesperson Michael Yourishin said.
Firefighters rescued the man from the house and took him to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased, according to fire department tweets.
“We really don’t have a whole lot of answers right now,” Yourishin said.
The fire began in the basement of the home and spread to the first and second floors, according to a tweet. Firefighters extinguished the fire by 6 a.m., despite the heavy fire conditions, Yourishin said.
The fire investigators estimated the fire left $50,000 worth of damage, Yourishin said.
The smoke alarms were working in the home, Yourishin said. Two other occupants were able to self-evacuate from the home because they heard the alarms, he said, and they had no injuries.
Fire investigators were brought onto the scene and the investigation is ongoing, Yourishin said.
