Tyrrell Pigrome only completed six passes against Ohio State, but most of them went for big gains

In Saturday’s 52-51 heartbreaking overtime loss to Ohio State, Maryland quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome only completed six passes. Despite the small number of completions, he threw for 181 yards, giving him an impressive 30.2 yards per completion.

While his final incompletion of the game has been watched and broken down countless times already, let’s take a look back at how Pigrome’s six completions put Maryland in a position to pull off the upset.

Completion one: Dontay Demus for 56 yards

On Pigrome’s first pass attempt of the game, the Terps used a quick play action to get the Buckeyes defense to bite. It paid off as Pigrome unloaded a deep shot downfield to find freshman Dontay Demus downfield for a massive 56-yard gain. The Terps would go on to get a field goal on that drive.

Completion two: Darryl Jones for eight yards

On Piggy’s second completion, the Terps didn’t open up the field for a long bomb. Instead Piggy used his mobility to scramble out of the pocket to find Darryl Jones for a clutch third down conversion. Unfortunately for the Terps, that drive would stall and the Terps would have to punt it away.

Completion three: Jeshaun Jones for no gain

This was Pigrome’s shortest completion of the game. The Terps tried to set up a screen pass to Jeshaun Jones on a third down, but the Buckeyes blew up the play. Right after that play, punter Wade Lees picked his lone completion of the game with a cheeky fake punt.

Completion four: Jeshaun Jones for 27 yards

Piggy’s next pass went to Jones again and it had a much better result. On what was initially ruled a completion out at the one-yard line, the Terps took the lead on a clutch 27-yard strike. Jones’ amazing catch gave him a team-leading fifth receiving touchdown of the season on one of Piggy’s best throws of the game.

Completion five: Darryl Jones for 60 yards

This was an absolute dime thrown by Pigrome. Right after Ohio State equalized at 38 with just under four minutes left, Piggy found the other Jones over the top for a 60-yard strike down to the one-yard line. The Terps would eventually punch the ball in, giving them a 45-38 lead with just under two minutes to go.

Completion six: Taivon Jacobs for 30 yards

On his final completion of the game, Piggy found sixth-year senior and former Ohio State commit Taivon Jacobs downfield for a 30-yard gain. That pass would put the Terps on the doorsteps for field goal range, but after an incompletion and two sacks, the Terps would have to take the game to overtime.

Pigrome wasn’t exactly Joe Montana against Ohio State, but he made his completions count in a big way. If he could have just been able to connect with Jeshaun Jones for a three-yard completion on the last play of the game, it would have come in a winning effort.
