With a 30-24 double-overtime triumph against Central Florida on Saturday night, the Maryland football team improved their season record to 3-0, matching last season’s win total in nine fewer outings.
The victory garnered coach DJ Durkin’s squad national attention, too.
Maryland received three votes in the AP Top 25 Poll and four votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It’s the first time the Terps have received any votes since the 2014 season.
They haven’t cracked the top 25 in either poll since starting the 2013 season 4-0. Maryland entered a matchup at No. 8 Florida State on Oct. 5, 2013, but the No. 25 Terps fell, 63-0, and finished the season 7-6.
The Terps have found early success in Durkin’s first season, downing Howard, 52-13, in the season opener and cruising to a 41-14 win against Florida International six days later.
While the Terps trailed twice against the Knights on Saturday, quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome rattled off a 24-yard touchdown run after quarterback Perry Hills suffered an injury on his first carry of the second overtime possession.
Durkin didn’t provide details about Hills’ status after the game but said the team will use its upcoming bye week to rest and rehabilitate before facing Purdue at Maryland Stadium on Oct. 1.
