University of Maryland temporarily restored hot water to the South Hill Community on Monday morning after students grappled with an outage for three days.

Residents in South Hill dorms have intermittently faced hot water and heat outages since November. The most recent hot water outage, which started on Friday, caused South Hill residents to seek hot showers in other buildings on campus.

The outages — caused by emergency repairs to a broken underground water main valve and outages in heating and water suppliers — lead to issues with shower pressure, water temperature and heating in the South Hill community.

During the disruptions, all residents had access to cold water for sinks and toilets. Students were given access to showers in Ritchie Coliseum, Eppley Recreation Center and Prince Frederick Hall.

Sophomore communication major Autumn Frank, a Hartford Hall resident, said the outages have disrupted her daily routines, such as showering.

Frank said the hot water in her dorm has been inconsistent for at least a month, with days of cold water and days of no water at all.

“I had to go to my friend’s apartment one night, take a shower and walk back in the cold,” she said. “It’s been pretty disruptive, and just annoying, especially because it’s cold outside.”

Khushi Desai, who also lives in Hartford Hall, expressed concern with the outages due to the uncertainty of the issue and the ongoing temporary fixes.

The sophomore environmental science and policy major noted that the water outages made it hard to take care of their health because they have a dry skin condition.

“It’s been especially bad the last week or so,” Desai said. “You flip the switch on the sink for hot water and just nothing comes out.”

Frustrated with the university, students created an online petition demanding compensation for lack of hot water. The petition had more than 480 signatures as of Tuesday night.

“We’ve endured cold showers, inconsistent water temperature, and at times, complete outages,” the petition read. “Not only has this impacted our comfort and wellbeing, but it also goes against the expectations and promises laid out in our housing agreements.”

Other South Hill residents, like Kenny Onafuwa, said issues with lack of heating in her apartment have left her worried.

“Our heater was either broken or it just had to be reset, because we had our [thermostat] all the way up at 75, but inside was still 55 degrees,” the sophomore physiology and neurobiology major said. “It was very cold for at least three days.”

Onafuwa added that she’s had to shower with a bucket twice because of the lack of hot water. She said the situation is frustrating, especially since students are paying to live in dorms.

Emartu Munu, a Howard Hall resident, said she hopes the temporary fix becomes permanent so she doesn’t have to wake up to how it was before.

The sophomore government and politics and public policy major said the ongoing issues have discouraged her from living in the South Hill community next year. Munu said this outage was a warning sign to other issues that could arise.

“Who knows? … Maybe in the summertime the same thing might happen again,” Munu said. “It did discourage me a lot.”
