Maryland women’s basketball guard Shyanne Sellers was selected No. 17 overall by the Golden State Valkyries in Monday’s WNBA Draft.

Sellers averaged 14.4 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in her senior season with the Terps. She was named to the All-Big Ten first team for the third straight year and became the first player in program history to record 1,500 career points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.

“I’m glad Golden State was the one to give a kid a chance,” Sellers said. “I know we’re gonna be ready to compete, we’re gonna be ready to win … I’m very familiar with some of my teammates and I’m just super excited.”

After being projected to go No. 6 overall in ESPN’s final mock draft, Sellers fell to the second round to a Valkyries team that begins their first season in the WNBA after being announced as an expansion team in 2023. She’ll play alongside fellow former Terp Chloe Bibby, who was signed by Golden State in February.

The two overlapped at Maryland during the 2021-22 season, and Sellers has said that Bibby helped mold her into a vocal voice on the floor early in her collegiate career.

Sellers joins a guard core of Kate Martin, Tiffany Hayes, Julie Vanloo and Veronica Burton in San Francisco.

Sellers — who finished 12th on Maryland’s all-time scoring list and third in all-time assists — is the 23rd Terp drafted into the WNBA and 17th under coach Brenda Frese. She’s the first Maryland player drafted since Diamond Miller and Abby Meyers in 2023.

“I’ve been surrounded by great teammates my entire career, so I’m super grateful for that and I’m excited to build on that,” Sellers said. “Whatever coach needs me to play, I can play that, and I want to execute it at a high level.”
