The Maryland State Board of Elections has moved Prince George’s County’s special election for county executive and District 5 council member to June 3.
The move delays the general election by a week. Earlier this month, the Prince George’s County Council voted to hold the general election on May 27. The primary election for both races is still scheduled for March 4.
“The [original date] for the Special General Election does not work for ensuring up-to-date voter registration rolls [and] maximum voter participation,” Jared DeMarinis, the state’s elections administrator, wrote in a Friday night post on X.
DeMarinis sent a letter to the council to inform them about the change, he wrote in the post.

The county council and state elections board did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
As of 9:05 p.m. on Friday, 11 candidates, including nine Democrats and two Republicans, are running for the vacant county executive seat. The vacancy comes after U.S. Sen.-elect Angela Alsobrooks resigned as county executive on Dec. 2 before being sworn into her new role in January.
Tara Jackson, who was previously the county’s chief administrative officer, is serving as the acting county executive.
The District 5 seat opened after council chair and former District 5 council member Jolene Ivey won another special election in November for one of the council’s at-large seats.
Seven candidates are vying for the District 5 seat.
