Maryland women’s soccer hired Michael Marchiano as its head coach on Wednesday, according to a Maryland athletics news release.
Marchiano, who played for the men’s soccer team under coach Sasho Cirovski from 2005 to 2008, was named the Terps’ interim coach Oct. 10 after the program announced Meghan Ryan Nemzer would no longer lead the program.
Maryland went 1-3-1 to close the season under Marchiano and won its first conference game in two years against Nebraska on Oct. 13.
“The connection I have with this university runs deep and I am super excited to lead our women’s program,” Marchaino said in the release. “Being a student-athlete at Maryland was one of the best experiences of my life and I’ll do all I can to assist in creating a similar pathway for our players.”

This will be Marchiano’s second collegiate head coaching position. He led Drexel men’s soccer from 2020 to 2022, ending his first season with a 6-3-2 record. In 2022 and 2023, Marchaino led the Dragons to back-to-back Coastal Athletic Conference tournament appearances for the first time since 2012 and 2013.
Before landing at Drexel, Marchiano held assistant coaching positions at Loyola, Army and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
“Maryland has made the right choice,” Brian Pensky, former Maryland women’s soccer and current Florida State head coach, said in the release. “He knows what it takes to thrive at Maryland. He’s lived it. We are all excited to see him bring Maryland women’s soccer back to a place of relevance.”
