The University of Maryland climbed to No. 44 in U.S. News’ national college rankings, according to the 2025 rankings released Tuesday.
The ranking is the best this university has ever received, according to a university news release. This university is ranked the No. 17 public higher education institution in the country, the list said, which is two spots higher than last year.
In a campuswide email, university president Darryll Pines and senior vice president and provost Jennifer King Rice attributed the high marks to the university’s improved graduation and retention rates, student-to-faculty ratio, graduate earnings and other factors.

“We should all be proud to be part of a university that is recognized across the board for our academic excellence, research enterprise, workplace environment, student experience and commitment to inclusivity,” Pines and Rice wrote.
The computer science department and engineering school also earned high marks in U.S. News’ 2025 rankings with a No. 19 and No. 16 national ranking, respectively. The business school placed No. 23 nationally.
The rankings reflect this university’s efforts to “achieve excellence in all we do,” Pines and Rice wrote.
