What to watch for: The Kevin Willard era kicks off tonight
This will be Maryland’s first game under new head coach Kevin Willard. The former Seton Hall head coach was hired to steer the Terps back to competitiveness. Maryland’s former head coach Mark Turgeon parted ways with the program in December due to pressure and failing to meet expectations. Danny Manning stepped in as interim head coach, but the Terps continued to struggle, going 15-17 en route to their first losing season in 29 years. Maryland has an incredibly proud history and Willard seems up to the task of bringing the program back to dominance.
Against Niagara, watch for a new style of offense. Maryland fan’s were often frustrated with Turgeon’s slow-paced, pick-and-roll heavy offense. Willard said Maryland will play very fast-paced this year, shooting a lot of three pointers. While this offense can be volatile, it should be exciting to watch. Additionally, watch for Donta Scott, who has transformed his body this offseason. The forward is down nearly 30 pounds from last year and is expected to have more playing time this season.
