An off-campus sexual assault was reported Monday night at College and Columbia avenues, about a five-minute walk from the College Park Metro Station.

An adult female victim was walking in the area at about 8:30 p.m. when a suspect approached her from behind and knocked her to the ground, according to Prince George’s County Police.

The suspect then sexually assaulted the female victim, county police said.

The University of Maryland Police Department issued an alert at 9:30 p.m Monday urging students to avoid the area. An all-clear was issued at about 10:30 p.m, after the suspect appeared to have left the area.

The suspect was initially described as a possibly white or Hispanic male, according to a UMPD alert.

The suspect was last seen heading toward the Old Town Playground, according to the UMPD alert. Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating the incident.
