You pick up the phone to call your parents, but they’re out to dinner and miss your call. They check that nifty caller ID and try to call you back. They dial your number, (301) 405-0000, and wait for you to pick up.

But you never will because, clearly, that’s not your number.

So, what the f—?!

Intrigued, Diversions picked up every campus phone it could find and made a call to a cell phone with the same result. So, we gave the infamous number a call and this is what we learned:

“Hello, you have reached the University of Maryland. The number you have dialed, (301) 405-0000, does not belong to any person or office at the university. This number appears on caller ID systems whenever any telephone at the university is used to make a call to a non-university number. There is no way to find out who actually called you.”

Thanks for your help. What the f—?!
