In between sinking both of his free throws in the final minute against the Terrapins men’s basketball team on Saturday night, Michigan State center Matt Costello flashed a smile. Relief. Finally.

Moments earlier, Costello had muscled through the No. 7 Terps’ frontcourt to pull down the Spartans’ 17th offensive rebound. After four losses in Big Ten play — and thee straight entering — sent the Spartans tumbling from the top of the national rankings, Michigan State had fended off a late Terps run. The Spartans won, 74-65.

The Terps registered a higher shooting percentage and didn’t turn the ball over at an alarmingly high rate.

But Saturday night at the Breslin Center, the Terps ran into an unstoppable juggernaut: an angry Tom Izzo team. Clad in neon green jerseys that mirrored the student section, the Spartans played desperate.

They fed off the raucous crowd, at times slapping the floor on defense. They hustled. They outrebounded the Terps, 46-36, and 17-9 on the offensive glass.

After a mostly smooth ride through nonconference play and the beginning of Big Ten play, it seems the Terps have developed a serious issue on the glass.

In Wednesday’s win overtime win against Northwestern, the Terps surrendered 16 offensive rebounds.

This would’ve been a nice win for the Terps’ resume — on the road in a raucous environment against the nation’s eleventh-ranked team. Perhaps it’ll result in an angrier, more desperate team when No. 9 Iowa comes to Xfinity Center on Jan. 28.

Guard Melo Trimble: A

Trimble started the game with consecutive misses from long range, but it was hardly an omen for the rest of his night. He turned in a number of highlight-reel plays, including a no-look pass to Robert Carter Jr. that the forward finished for the team’s first lead, 44-42. Later, he nailed a clutch 3-pointer to cut the Terps’ deficit to 62-59. Turgeon’s best player finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon: C+

He hit a couple of 3-pointers — including a fadeaway prayer to beat the shot clock and bring the Terps within one, 50-49 — but otherwise didn’t find the net. He also added seven boards and three assists, but 2-for-11 shooting won’t get the job done. It’s the second straight game the graduate transfer has had offensive struggles.

Forward Jake Layman: C+

The senior air-balled his first attempt, which proved fitting. He finished 2-for-9 and brought down just two rebounds without recording a block or a steal.

Forward Robert Carter Jr: B

Carter was the only Terp besides Trimble to reach double figures, and came up big early in the second half when he scored four consecutive points to put the Terps up 46-24.

Center Diamond Stone: C+

Stone re-entered the game with 4:08 left and the Terps down seven. He wasn’t able to play hero, though. He knocked down a couple free throws late, but finished with just six points and six boards when his team desperately needed his inside presence.

Guard Jared Nickens: D+

Nickens played 20 minutes. He didn’t score. Not much else to say here.
