I’ve never seen Star Wars. Yes, I know I am an uncultured swine who‘s part of the reason for the downfall of society, but you have to give me a break at some point. Those movies are really long, and there are a lot of them. I just don’t have time for that kind of intense commitment in my life right now.

But with a new installment of the franchise premiering in December, I think it might be time for me to finally sit down and watch the films. How many movies are there again? There can’t be more than three, right?

I do know enough about the Star Wars culture to know people are really excited about this new movie, Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. After Disney announced it had purchased Lucasfilm from Star Wars creator George Lucas, obtaining rights to the franchise, many people were concerned the quality of the movies would take a downward spiral.

However, with the release of the upcoming movie’s brand-new trailer, naysayers are eating their words and the hype has been steadily increasing on social media.

I couldn’t miss out on the excitement, so I decided to watch the trailer myself.

This trailer doesn’t give away any plot points at all, does it? Or maybe it does, and I just don’t understand it because of the whole never-seen-Star-Wars thing. However, it is evident to me that this movie picks up a long time after the last installment left off. There’s a giant spaceship in the middle of some sand dunes and there’s a shot of an old, weathered Darth Vader mask.

I never realized how much of a family affair Star Wars was until now. The narrator of the trailer goes on about all of the members of his family that have the Force: his father, his sister and hey, looks like we have it, too! What is the Force, exactly?

There are a few action montages intertwined with some more non-plot-defining scenes. It definitely brings a lot of suspense to the table.

Overall thoughts: I guess I would be more excited about this trailer if I had actually seen the previous nine movies and understood the plot. Who would’ve guessed? Nevertheless, I think this newest installment will be pretty successful. Who knows, maybe I’ll even catch up on all the movies I’ve missed so I can go see it in theaters.
