At first glance, it would seem that coach Mark Turgeon would have no reason to fret after the Terrapins men’s basketball team’s 88-63 waxing of Rutgers at Xfinity Center on Wednesday night.

The Terps made the Scarlet Knights look like a Division II team. They went into the half with a 28-point lead, led by as many as 42 and four Terps scored at least 12 points.

But as Turgeon looked on at the walloping, he must’ve harbored some worry. After all, Melo Trimble, the Terps’ star point guard, spent the entire second half on the bench nursing ‘hamstring tightness.’

In his postgame press conference, Turgeon said Trimble will be fine. But until Terps fans see him back on the court, the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year’s health will be an important topic of conversation.

Here are my grades:

Guard Melo Trimble: INC

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon: B+

Sulaimon looked like a senior playing against a JV squad in the early going. He needed just 23 minutes to drop 15 points and added five rebounds and two assists.

Forward Jake Layman: A-

The senior continued showing the toughness that’s become a big part of his game recently, blocking two shots. He also poured in a game-high 18 points on 5-for-10 shooting, resembling the player that led the Terps for stretches last season.

Forward Robert Carter Jr.: B+

Carter was once again untouchable in the post, and finished 6-for-7 from the field. He took only one 3-pointer — it was his only miss — and he tallied seven rebounds in just 21 minutes. If Carter plays to his strengths, he can match up with any power forward in the country.

Center Diamond Stone: A-

The freshman started for the first time since the North Carolina game Dec. 1 and didn’t disappoint. He made easy work of the Scarlet Knights’ diminutive frontcourt for 15 points and brought down 10 rebounds — four on the offensive glass. Plus, he had three blocks.

Guard Jared Nickens: B+

Nickens was 1-for-11 from three-point range in the Terps’ past two contests, but he turned things around Wednesday. The sophomore with the quick release knocked down a couple 3-pointers and had nine points. But that wasn’t the most impressive part of Nickens’ night, as he corralled 10 rebounds.

Guard Jaylen Brantley: C-

Wednesday provided a good opportunity for Brantley to increase Turgeon’s confidence in him as a backup with Trimble sitting the second half. Instead, he shot 1-for-6 from the field.
