The end of July was a busy time for Maryland football coach DJ Durkin in bolstering his 2019 recruiting class. The Terps made it to double-digit commitments by making three additions, all from Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area.

The biggest haul came July 30, when three-star running back Jordan Houston committed to Maryland via Twitter.

The No. 7 all-purpose running back in the 2019 class and the No. 16 player in Virginia per 247Sports’s composite rankings, Houston’s top five included Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Houston is from Oakton, Virginia and attends Flint Hill School.

The day prior, his teammate Trey Rucker committed to the Terps. Rucker, a three-star safety, chose Maryland over Indiana, North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia and others. He is the No. 24 player in Virginia and No. 71 safety in the country, per 247Sports’s composite rankings.

On July 28, Avalon School wide receiver Todd Simmons committed to College Park. The Gaithersburg native had offers from Boston College and Connecticut, among others, but will be a preferred walk-on with the Terps.

Wide receivers coach and Virginia native Chris Beatty led both Rucker’s and Houston’s recruitments, according to 247Sports. Beatty has landed four of Maryland’s 11 recruits, three of them being from Virginia.

The Terps still have significant work to do if they are to match last season’s class, which was ranked No. 28 in the country by 247Sports. Maryland’s 2019 class is currently ranked No. 59 nationally and No. 13 in the Big Ten.
