Maryland men’s lacrosse coach John Tillman signed a contract extension through June 30, 2030, Maryland athletics announced in a Thursday news release.

Tillman’s 77.7 winning percentage leads all active Division I lacrosse coaches since becoming the Terps’ coach in 2011, with a record of 192-55. Maryland has won two national championships during his tenure — in 2017 and 2022 — and has reached six other title games along with 10 Final Four appearances.

The coach ranks second all-time in victories in Maryland men’s lacrosse history. Since he took over, the Terps have won 31 NCAA tournament games — the most in Division I lacrosse.

Tillman has led the Terps to 13 consecutive NCAA tournaments, the longest active streak nationally. Maryland begins the 2025 NCAA tournament against Air Force on Sunday at SECU Stadium.

“I have nothing but respect for the Maryland men’s lacrosse program, and being able to serve as the head coach of this program is something I take great pride in,” Tillman said in the release. “I am proud to be the head coach at Maryland and look forward to continuing to build a culture on and off the field, producing great men. It is an honor to coach this program, representing our school and our state.”

Tillman served as Harvard men’s lacrosse coach from 2008-2010. He was an assistant coach and a head assistant coach at Navy from 1996-2007.

Tillman is also a member of the Tewaaraton Selection Committee and the IMLCA Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He previously served as the chair of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee.
