Organizers of the event included the University of Maryland’s Student Government Association and University Honors College ahead of the Nov. 5 city election.
Fazlul Kabir, who is believed to be the first Muslim mayor in Maryland, said he is grateful for the accepting community he has found in College Park and for his new opportunity to continue serving the city.
City council members Fazlul Kabir, Kate Kennedy and Denise Mitchell, as well as political newcomer Bryan Haddad vied for residents’ votes at polling sites.
In 2019, the council voted to sell bonds to pay for the new city hall and Duvall Field project. Kennedy supported selling the bonds, but was absent at the meeting, while Kabir and Mitchell voted against it.
