The proposal would redefine bereavement as the period of mourning after “someone close to the student” dies, and list it as an acceptable justification for an excused absence.
The resolution comes as the Trump administration seeks to exert control over higher education, including cutting research funding and revoking student visas.
Trump has carried out a number of actions against the country’s education system since taking office in January with the goal of dismantling the education department.
