Prince George’s County Council at-large member Calvin Hawkins II resigned from the council effective Monday, he announced in a news release last week.
Hawkins will now serve in a new role as the county’s assistant deputy chief administrative officer for economic development. His resignation comes less than a year before the end of his term, which was set to end Dec. 5, 2026.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the residents of Prince George’s County for the trust and support you’ve shown me throughout my tenure on the Council,” Hawkins wrote in the news release. “Serving on this body has been a profound honor, and I take immense pride in what we’ve achieved together.”
Hawkins was on his second and final term as the council’s at-large member, a position he began in December 2018.
As council chair in 2021 and 2022, Hawkins helped lead the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release read. He also sponsored the council’s Re-Entry Advisory Board, which provided resources for county residents returning from incarceration.

Hawkins’ resignation is one of several recent changes within the county’s government. In June 2024, former at-large council member Mel Franklin resigned from his position before pleading guilty for using campaign funds for personal use and falsifying documents to cover it up. After his release from jail, Hawkins hired Franklin to be his chief of staff.
Former District 5 council member Jolene Ivey won a November 2024 special election to take Franklin’s position, leaving her seat vacant. Voters then chose Shayla Adams-Stafford to fill the District 5 seat during a special election in June.
During the same election, county residents chose former state’s attorney Aisha Braveboy to be county executive after Angela Alsobrooks won her U.S. Senate race in November 2024. Tara Jackson, who was the acting county executive before Braveboy’s election, took on the role of state’s attorney.
The council will not hold a special election for the at-large council position because there is less than a year left of the term, according to the release. Instead, it is taking applications for the vacant at-large seat until 5 p.m. on Dec. 26.
