No. 7 Maryland women’s basketball returned home from its most physical matchup of the season for likely its easiest.
The Terps beat Minnesota in double overtime after trailing by nine with 45 seconds left. Delaware State hasn’t beaten a Division I opponent this season.
Maryland allowed its fewest points in team history in a 91-21 win over Delaware State Wednesday at Xfinity Center. The Terps (12-0, 1-0 Big Ten) relied on non-typical starters.
Coach Brenda Frese rested two of her stars, Addi Mack and Saylor Poffenbarger. The two were both dealt with ankle injuries, with Poffenbarger seen wearing a boot on her left foot. Mack and Poffenbarger each played 48 minutes against Minnesota in the one-point victory.
The new starting five consisted of Kyndal Walker, Mir McLean, Oluchi Okananwa, Yarden Garzon and Isi Ozzy-Momodu. McLean appears to be replacing Kaylene Smikle in Frese’s new starting lineup. The senior announced she’s undergoing season-ending knee surgery.

The group started with a 12-0 run. Garzon, who made a crucial three-pointer in the first overtime against Minnesota, sank her first two shots behind the arc and led with eight quick points.
“I just wanted to make a statement from the start that we are here to play and we are all down to put 40 minutes together,” Garzon said.
Garzon was one of two starters who didn’t get a break. Instead, she got to show off the scoring talent Indiana knew her for, matching a team-high with 18 points on 50 percent shooting. The captain has largely played a facilitating role with a team-high 39 assists this season.
“The coaches challenged me today to show up and lead the team,” Garzon said. “I know the coaches have my back and I know what they need from me, and that makes everything a little bit easier.”
Okananwa, like Garzon, got little rest. She played into the fourth quarter.
The Duke transfer recorded 18 points and three steals. Okananwa’s speed was on show when she made a steal in the final minute of the third quarter and scored a layup.
The game gave Frese an opportunity to test out her post players. She has rotated between Breanna Williams, Ozzy-Momodu and Marya Boiko at different points all season. Williams said after the Mount St. Mary’s win last week that the trio brought completely different looks to the position and could match well with different opponents.

Ozzy Momodu posted her first double-double as a Terp. The redshirt junior returned to the starting lineup for the first time since November 16 against Princeton.
Williams pulled up for a layup and drew a foul for a three-point play in the second quarter before adding her second 3-pointer of the season. Boiko showed off her own scoring skills, hitting a reverse layup under the net in the fourth.
Frese is still unsure which one of her bigs will take a prominent role.
“We’re trying to figure out who that’s going to be in that rotation,” Frese said. “We want to keep building that depth.”
Maryland has only one nonconference opponent left in nine days against Central Connecticut State.
The Terps need all the rest possible for their stars. The bench has been cut by 20% due to season-ending injuries for Smikle, Lea Bartelme, and Ava McKennie.
