The Prince George’s County’s environment department announced a new initiative Monday that aims to make installing solar panels more accessible to county homeowners.
As part of the county’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by the end of 2030, the program offers grants of $5,000 to $10,000 to install solar panels on eligible households. It also aims to connect residents with contractors and inform them about the panels.
Residents are eligible to apply for the grants if they live in a single-family residence within county lines, do not already have a rooftop solar system and agree to own the solar photovoltaic system. Grant applications are open until Feb. 27 and are available on a rolling basis, or until funds run out, according to the Solarize Prince George’s website.

The new campaign expands on the county’s Solar Energy Grant program, which offers grants for environmentally friendly home improvements.
Owning solar panels can make homeowners eligible for federal tax incentives, according to the county website.
In a news release about the program, environment department director Samuel Moki said the widespread use of solar panels will help the county achieve its energy goal in a cost-friendly way.
”By simplifying the process and offering meaningful financial incentives, we’re helping ensure every Prince Georgian can benefit from the transition to clean energy,” Moki said.
