Virginia Tech is often one of Maryland football’s main competitors in recruiting the Washington, D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area. After starting the season 1-3 and firing head coach Brent Pry, it seems likely several Hokies will enter the transfer portal come wintertime.
Six players on Virginia Tech’s roster are from Maryland.
Freshman linebacker Noah Chambers, a three-star prospect from DeMatha Catholic, and freshman offensive lineman Gavin Crawford, a former three-star recruit from Good Counsel, visited Maryland during their recruiting processes.
Thomas Wilder, a four-star offensive tackle and the No. 9 player in Virginia in the 2026 class, decommitted from Virginia Tech on Sept. 15. He also visited College Park in June and would be a valuable addition to the Terps’ recruiting class next year.
Commits
Women’s Basketball
Eva Yebila, 2026, Center, Great Britain
The 6-foot-5 prospect is coach Brenda Frese’s third 2026 commit, joining composite five-star forward Jordyn Jackson and four-star forward Mimi Thiero. Yebila played in FIBA’s U18 Women’s Eurobasket for Great Britain’s national team in July, averaging 5.4 points and 6.7 rebounds in seven games.
Yebila and Thiero, who is 6-foot-4, add solid size to Maryland’s frontcourt. Freshman forward Marya Boiko is currently the Terps’ tallest player at 6-foot-4.

Baseball
Landis Pickett, 2027, First Base/Catcher, Bishop John Snyder (Jacksonville, Florida)
Pickett announced his commitment to Maryland on Sunday, becoming the Terps’ second infield commit alongside shortstop Jack Swanson. The junior has also pitched in high school and throws a fastball that tops at 89 miles per hour, according to Perfect Game, though he likely profiles as a first baseman or catcher at the collegiate level.
Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, LSU and North Carolina, among other power conference programs, showed interest in Pickett.
Men’s Lacrosse
Max Wetherup, 2027, Attack/Midfield, The Hill Academy (Ontario, Canada)
The four-star Canadian chose Maryland on Wednesday, increasing coach John Tillman’s 2027 class to six players. Prep Lacrosse ranks Wetherup as the No. 62 player in his class.
He’s the Terps’ second attack/midfield commit of the 2027 cycle, joining four-star William Schwarz.
Women’s Soccer
Gabrielle Johnson, 2027, Forward, Bethesda SC
Johnson is one of Maryland’s five three-star commits in the 2027 class, according to TopDrawerSoccer, and is the second forward prospect — along with four-star Mia Forney — to choose the Terps. She’s the program’s first in-state recruit of the cycle and plays club soccer for Bethesda SC, the same team that produced freshman forward Mckinley Heaven.
Offers
Men’s Basketball
J’Lon Lyons, 2027, Point Guard, Grace Brethren Christian (Clinton)
Coach Buzz Williams offered Lyons, the No. 53 player and No. 3 player in Maryland in the 2027 class, Saturday, adding to the 6-foot-3 guard’s list of offers. Indiana, Virginia, Florida State, Mississippi State and other programs have offered him as well.
He’s already taken visits to Georgetown and VCU and looks to be one of the top targets for schools that recruit the area.
Lyons marks the seventh point guard prospect and 16th player who Maryland has offered in the 2027 class.

Visits
Kaden House, 2026, Guard, Compass Prep (Chandler, Arizona)
Kaden House, the son of former NBA player Eddie House, visited College Park on Sept. 13 after receiving an offer in July. The four-star prospect also visited TCU on Sept. 19 and will head to Vanderbilt — whom the Terps have lost out to for a few four-star recruits lately — Oct. 10.
He’s ranked the No. 43 prospect nationally by the 247Sports composite rankings.
Junior County, 2026, Shooting Guard, Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah)
County visited Maryland on Sept. 19, his third visit of the cycle. As expected for the No. 1 player in Utah and a top-40 recruit, the Terps are competing with powerhouses.
The shooting guard also visited Indiana and Arizona and will officially visit Purdue and UConn. 247Sports lists his interest in Indiana, Arizona and Purdue as “warm,” while Maryland and UConn are listed as “warmer.”
Announcements
Anthony Brown, 2026, Point Guard, Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.)
A week after four-star center Jackson Sheffield committed to Vanderbilt over Maryland, four-star guard Anthony Brown did the same. The No. 1 player in Washington, D.C., had a visit to College Park slated for October but canceled and announced his commitment Wednesday.
Brown visited Vanderbilt on Sept. 20 and narrowed his recruitment to Indiana, Maryland and Vanderbilt before making his decision.
