Maryland football redshirt freshman Daniel “DD” Lee Holmes was arrested on driving under the influence charges early Wednesday morning in College Park, according to court records.
Holmes, a 19-year-old from Washington, D.C., also faces charges such as driving while impaired by alcohol, reckless driving and negligent driving, court records state. The location of Holmes’ arrest and violation is listed at Looney’s Pub.
Online records show the arrest occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. If convicted, the defensive lineman could face up to a year in jail and $1,000 in fines under Maryland’s DUI laws.
“We are aware of an incident involving Daniel Holmes and are handling it internally,” a Maryland athletics spokesperson wrote in a statement to The Diamondback.
Lt. Rosanne Hoaas told The Diamondback that a University of Maryland Police officer was patrolling near the 8100 block of Baltimore Avenue at about 1:07 a.m. when they heard a collision inside a parking garage. The officer found a vehicle that had struck a wall and detected the smell of alcohol from the driver, according to Hoaas’ statement.
Police administered standardized field sobriety tests and said Holmes did not perform as instructed, the statement read. He was taken to UMPD headquarters for processing and later released with paperwork.
Holmes has appeared in all four games this season, recording three tackles. The redshirt freshman transferred to Maryland for the 2025 season after appearing in one game with Florida State last year. This is the Terps’ bye week.
It’s the second time in three seasons a Maryland figure has faced a DUI charge during the team’s bye week — former offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested under similar circumstances in 2023.
