University of Maryland Facilities Management has inspected and treated areas where body lice was found on campus, according to Thursday university statement.
The university received a report of a bug infestation in McKeldin Library on Wednesday afternoon. The news spread around social media apps like Reddit and YikYak, causing some students to panic about what was later revealed to be a body lice outbreak.
Body lice are small insects that are about the size of a sesame seed and can spread through direct contact. The insects feed on human blood and can cause symptoms like itching and rashes.
As of a statement sent to The Diamondback at 6:11 p.m. on Thursday, the university is continuing to investigate to ensure the lice have not affected other areas on campus.
The university’s pest control management units have inspected and treated the locations with body lice on campus, according to the statement. The University Health Center published a news release on Thursday evening with more information about how to respond to body lice.
The entire fourth floor of the library was also inspected and no additional bugs were found, the university confirmed on Wednesday.
The university encouraged students to contact Facilities Service Central if they see a problem on campus, according to the statement. The university also advised students to contact the University Health Center if they experience symptoms.
