A University of Maryland animal and avian sciences lecturer was arrested Friday and charged with multiple counts of indecent exposure.

Richard “Charlie” Apter exposed himself to a group of camp counselors and youth campers in front of the Chemistry Building on July 19, according to the University of Maryland Police Department. Further investigation, which included a review of security camera footage, found that the exposure was intentional.

Apter has since been charged with two counts of indecent exposure and one count of indecent exposure to minor.

UMPD applied for and received an arrest warrant on Friday. Apter was arrested that day and taken to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro for processing, UMPD said.

“This individual has been placed on administrative leave and is prohibited from accessing campus facilities pending further investigation,” this university wrote in a statement to The Diamondback.

Apter was still listed on the animal and avian sciences faculty page at the time of this story’s publication. This is his thirteenth year at this university.

This semester Apter is teaching courses including animal management and animal behavior. He has also taught an I-series “food class” that is part of this university’s general education curriculum.

He was released ahead of his trial after a $2,500 bond was posted on Tuesday. His trial is scheduled for Dec. 2 in the Prince George’s County District Court in Hyattsville.
