Prince George’s County Public Schools Superintendent Millard House II will resign from his position Wednesday, according to a statement from the school system.

The superintendent and the Board of Education reached an agreement Thursday night during a closed session meeting that House will step down. House was named superintendent in 2023 and his term was previously set to end in 2027.

“The Superintendent has provided bold ideas and actions that have set the system on a path for continued improvement,” the school system’s statement read. “The time spent at PGCPS benefited the overall system and allowed for the Superintendent to place another solid brick in the wall of ever continuing educational success for the students and teachers of Prince George’s County.”

County Executive-elect Aisha Braveboy announced Friday morning she selected Shawn Joseph as interim superintendent. Joseph is the co-director of Howard University’s Urban Superintendents Academy and served as a deputy superintendent in PGCPS from 2014-16.

The Board of Education will work to formalize Joseph’s appointment in the coming days, according to a county news release.

“Moving swiftly and decisively now is critical to ensuring forward momentum in our public schools,” Braveboy said in the news release. “This is the right leadership team at the right time to usher in a new era of excellence.”

The Prince George’s County Educators’ Association wrote in a news release it hopes the change in administration will “restore stable, competent, accountable leadership.” The union thanked the outgoing superintendent and the Board of Education for their decision and prioritizing the needs of the district.

Earlier this month, the union voted no confidence in House and called on the Board of Education to act immediately to restore community members’ confidence in the school system.

Educators said they were frustrated House failed to provide safe learning environments and administrative support, according to a PGCEA news release.
