Roots Natural Kitchen in College Park will close on Wednesday, according to the restaurant’s general manager Richard Cunningham.

The restaurant, which offers salads and grain bowls, is located on Calvert Road across from Trader Joe’s. The main reason the restaurant will close is because it is located too far from the University of Maryland campus and the other restaurants, Cunningham said.

Originally the chain attempted to negotiate the location’s lease, but when it failed to do so, it decided to close the restaurant down completely, Cunningham said.

Cunningham said the restaurant’s abrupt closure at the end of April is likely because the company does not want to pay another month of rent. The College Park lease is the most expensive out of their locations, he added .

“[Corporate] feel like it’s hard for students to walk past all those other great restaurants all the way down here,” Cunningham said.

The company is looking for a new College Park location closer to campus, but there is no time frame on when a reopening may occur, according to Cunningham.

Roots Natural Kitchen opened its Calvert Road location in 2023.
