The University of Maryland’s information college dean Keith Marzullo will step down from his role on June 30, according to an email sent Tuesday to the college from Jennifer King Rice, this university’s senior vice president and provost.
Marzullo, who has served as the college’s dean since 2016, will become the information and computer sciences dean at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Information college professor Doug Oard will serve as interim dean beginning on July 1, according to the email.
Oard has worked at the information college since 1996. He also holds an affiliated appointment with the computer science department and the applied mathematics and statistics and scientific computation programs, Rice’s email read.

In an email to the information college on Tuesday, Marzullo said the decision to leave was “bittersweet,” citing this university’s two-term limit for deans.
“Working hand-in-hand with alumni and partners through this to ensure that the INFO College stayed the information research and education leader of today and tomorrow is one of my most treasured experiences,” Marzullo wrote in the email.
Marzullo earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in applied physics and electrical engineering from Stanford University, according to the information college’s website.
In her email on Tuesday, Rice credited Marzullo with increasing student enrollment in the college and launching the first undergraduate information degree program. Marzullo also created partnerships across this university’s colleges and enhanced informational research capabilities, Rice wrote in her email.
A national search for a new dean will begin this fall, according to Rice’s email.
