Maryland athletics has hired Buzz Williams as the next Maryland men’s basketball head coach, the university announced in a release Tuesday.

“It is an honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the University of Maryland men’s basketball team,” Williams said in the release. “In leading this program, I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution.”
Williams, 52, comes to College Park after spending six seasons at Texas A&M. He led the Aggies to a 120-73 record overall record and a 56-44 conference record. The Van Alstyne, Texas, native previously coached at Virginia Tech, Marquette and New Orleans.

Texas A&M was a No. 4 seed in the 2025 tournament, its highest under Williams, and fell to Michigan in the second round. The Aggies finished ranked 40th in offense and the ninth in defense in the country, according to KenPom’s adjusted efficiency ratings, good for a No. 18 overall net rating.
They posted the best offensive rebounding rate in the country each of the past two seasons, according to KenPom.
He becomes the program’s 11th all-time head coach.
