The University of Maryland launched a new career and education resource platform to aid federal workers impacted by recent layoffs and funding changes, according to a campuswide email Thursday from university president Darryll Pines.

The Pathways Forward Resource Hub offers career transition resources for laid-off federal workers, including interview and resume tips and leadership growth strategies. The website also includes options for further education through this university’s graduate programs, professional certification programs and online courses.

“Our mission is to educate and empower future leaders, discover new knowledge and make groundbreaking discoveries — all while serving the public good and creating a community of care,” Pines wrote in Thursday’s email.

Thursday’s launch comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency continue to make workforce cuts across federal departments after calling for “large-scale reductions in force” and freezing trillions of dollars in federal grants in February, according to the Associated Press.

The layoffs have significantly impacted the greater Washington, D.C., area, which has the highest concentration of federal workers after Washington, D.C., itself, the Associated Press reported in February.

Maryland is expected to lose more than 28,000 federal jobs under Trump’s administration, The Diamondback reported earlier this month.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore also announced resources on Feb. 28 to support Marylanders impacted by recent federal layoffs. Moore’s action plan includes opportunities for unemployment insurance, health coverage and career transition materials for eligible Maryland residents, according to the announcement’s website.

This university’s resource hub is a collaboration between this university’s community engagement center, extended studies program and information technology division, according to the email. The hub is intended for campus and community members, but is available to anyone looking for career transition resources, the email said.

According to the resource hub’s website, anyone federally employed as of early 2025 qualifies for a 30 percent tuition discount for the first year of an eligible graduate program in this university’s business school.

The website’s chatbot can also help connect users with resources relevant to their career goals, Pines said in the email. Specific career guides and networking opportunities are available for university alumni, according to the hub’s website.
