Maryland field hockey coach Missy Meharg signed a contract extension through the end of 2028, according to a Maryland athletics news release on Thursday.
Meharg has won seven national championships during her 37-year tenure as the Terps’ head coach. The nine-time National Coach of the Year is also the winningest active head coach in Division I field hockey with 655 total victories and a 78.9 winning percentage. Maryland went 13-7 in 2024, posting its second-fewest wins in the last 30 years.
The Terps have won 27 conference titles under Meharg. Many of those came when Maryland was in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Meharg and the Terps have captured six regular season titles and three conference tournament championships since joining the Big Ten in 2014.

“It’s a privilege to continue leading Terps’ field hockey and building on the incredible legacy we’ve created together,” Meharg said in the release.
Meharg was an All-American field hockey and lacrosse player at Delaware before joining the Maryland coaching staff as an assistant in 1985. She took over as head coach three seasons later and has held the position ever since.
In 2009, one year after winning her fifth national championship as the Terps’ head coach, Meharg was inducted into the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
“Missy is a living legend, having set the standard of excellence for everyone here at Maryland,” athletic director Damon Evans said in the release. “The winningest coach across all sports in Maryland Athletic history, Missy is an icon in the sport of field hockey.”
