District 3 council member Stuart Adams resigned from the College Park City Council, the city announced Tuesday.
His resignation will be effective Jan. 8, according to the city news release. Adams has represented District 3, which includes Fraternity Row, multiple student apartment complexes and the Old Town and Calvert Hills neighborhoods, since November 2021.
His resignation had been in the works for a few months, Adams told The Diamondback. He said the resignation was due to difficulties balancing his two young children, day job and duties as a council member.
“As a young father, my availability as a city council member has become more constrained,” Adams wrote in his Sunday resignation letter. “In this holiday season, I must reflect and based on weighing my priorities, I have decided to resign from my position.”

Adams is a community resilience engineer for housing, transportation and disaster mitigation and program manager at the consulting company Stantec, according to the city website.
On the council, Adams is a vocal advocate on many city issues, including vacant properties, stormwater management and bike lanes.
“He’s not afraid to make hard choices and make hard votes,” District 3 council member John Rigg said. “He’s a great colleague and we’re going to miss him.”
The vacancy will be filled through a special election within 65 days of Jan. 8. The winner will fill the vacancy until the November 2025 city election, according to Tuesday’s news release.
“It’s time for somebody else to take the reins,” Adams said. “I’m confident we have a lot of great residents in District 3 that will consider running.”
