Maryland women’s basketball production off the bench has been a key component to its undefeated start to the season. Coach Brenda Frese feels her roster is “seven starters” deep, where anyone can make an impact.

Allie Kubek was that player on Thursday.

The graduate student scored 15 points off the bench on an efficient 5-for-9 shooting as the No. 8 Terps topped William & Mary, 107-57, in front of an expected crowd of over 15,000 at the Xfinity Center on Field Trip Day. Maryland (11-0) returned to the court after a 12-day hiatus.

Kubek scored 15 or more points for the third time this year and added 11 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the campaign.

“I think that it really doesn’t define me as a player,” Kubek said. “I’m more than happy to come off the bench to give the team a punch.”

Kubek’s fast start began immediately when she entered the game in the first quarter. The forward scored her first point from the free throw line and followed that with a 3-pointer. She added two more free throws in the first quarter to lead all scorers with six points as Maryland’s lead grew to nine, 23-14.

She carried her scoring into the next period, making two layups and adding a free throw to complete a three-point play. She was the first player to hit double-digits, and ended the first half with 11 points.

Guard Kaylene Smikle matched Kubek as the only two players to reach double digits in the first half. The junior notched 10 points in the second quarter alone, led with a pair of 3-pointers, to pace all scorers with 14 points at the half. Her scoring barrage helped her hit 1,000 career points, the fourth active Terps player to hit the benchmark.

“It’s a blessing to accomplish this one milestone here at Maryland,” Smikle said. “I feel like it just made the accomplishment better being in such a great program with people around me who genuinely care for me.”

Maryland’s lead ballooned in the second frame by way of its defense. The Terps held the Tribe to just seven made field goals and caused six turnovers. Maryland outscored William & Mary (3-8) in the quarter, 26-10, and held a 19-point lead at halftime.

Kubek and Smikle continued to pace the Terps’ scoring in the second half. Kubek added two easy layups in the paint as Smikle added another 3-pointer, putting her over 20 points for the sixth time this year.

The guard duo combined for 11 of Maryland’s 30 points in the third quarter.

As the Terps’ lead grew, so did their free throw amount. They attempted at least eight attempts in every period, and made 10 of 14 in the third quarter alone to extend their lead to 79-50.

Maryland ended the contest with a remarkable 50 free throw attempts, making 35. The plethora of free throws was the most taken by the Terps since 2000, and the most made shots from the line since 2014. William & Mary only attempted six.

“I liked how aggressive we were, being able to get to the glass and draw fouls,” Frese said. “You want to have those opportunities at the free throw line to add points.”

Maryland’s second half defense limited William & Mary to 10 field goals and only 27 points, including just seven in the fourth quarter.

“I thought the last quarter and a half — midway through the third and the fourth — was probably some of our best defensive effort,” Frese said.

The Terps racked up more bench points in the final period. Junior guard Bri McDaniel accounted for 10 points in the fourth with two 3-pointers and a layup while graduate student guard Mir McLean contributed four more from the floor.

Four players that didn’t start — Kubek, McDaniel, McLean and freshman guard Ava McKennie — combined for a 46 percent shooting percentage and scored 42 points.

Senior forward Christina Dalce, who finished with 16 points, drained a free throw to put Maryland at the 100-point mark for the second time this year. Six different Terps scored over 10 points in the 50-point victory as they matched their season-best scoring total.
