Maryland football quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. is entering the transfer portal, he announced in an Instagram post Thursday.
The redshirt junior had an up-and-down season for Maryland in 2024 after a hot start. He passed for at least two touchdowns and more than 250 yards in each of his first five games with just two interceptions as the Terps started 3-2.
Then, Edwards endured significant struggles. The Springfield, Virginia, native led Maryland to a 1-5 record across his next six starts, throwing seven interceptions and four touchdowns. An injury limited his time against Iowa and kept him out of the Terps’ season finale.
Edwards was in an uneasy situation replacing Taulia Tagovailoa, the greatest statistical quarterback in program history. He started behind a new offensive line while coach Michael Locksley took over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Josh Gattis mid-season.

Edwards still finished the season near the top of many Big Ten passing marks. His 2,881 passing yards, 273 completions and 420 attempts all ranked within the top three.
The Terps will have a different starting quarterback for the third straight season with Edwards’ departure. Redshirt sophomore MJ Morris, who transferred from NC State last offseason, is the current roster’s lone signal caller with considerable experience.
Sophomore Cam Edge, who appeared in four games for Maryland — including in the Music City Bowl last year — left the program in October. Redshirt freshman Champ Long is the only other quarterback on Maryland’s roster who appeared in a game, playing five snaps against Penn State.
Four-star Archbishop Spalding quarterback Malik Washington is set to enter the program next season as well. Locksley has had high praise for Washington, who could compete for the starting job as a freshman.
