Democrat Jolene Ivey won the special election for the vacant Prince George’s County Council at-large seat.

Ivey, who currently serves as council chair and represents District 5, earned 87.3 percent of the vote with 325 of 327 precincts reporting as of early Wednesday morning. She defeated Republican challenger and former Prince George’s County Police officer Michael Riker.

Ivey joined the county council in 2018 after representing District 47 for the Maryland House of Delegates for eight years.

The special election came after former at-large council member Mel Franklin resigned in June before being charged with felony theft scheme, embezzlement and perjury. Franklin pled guilty to the charges in August and is scheduled to be sentenced in November.

In her new role, Ivey plans to focus on environmental justice and family and child welfare, according to her website.

Ivey’s victory will trigger another special election to fill her District 5 seat, The Diamondback previously reported.
