Jolene Ivey won the Democratic primary for the vacant Prince George’s County Council at-large seat.
Ivey, who chairs the county council and represents District 5, earned nearly 48 percent of the vote in the Aug. 6 special election. She won the primary by more than 10,000 votes as Bowie Mayor Tim Adams came in second place in a crowded Democratic field for the vacant seat.
Michael Riker, a Cheltenham resident and retired police officer who spent more than 20 years with Prince George’s County Police, won the Republican primary with more than 45 percent of the vote.
The special election comes after former at-large council member Mel Franklin resigned from his seat on June 14. Six days later, Franklin was charged in the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court with multiple counts of felony theft scheme, embezzlement and perjury related to his alleged misuse of campaign funds.

Ivey plans to invest in education, public safety and new development, according to her website.
The at-large seat will allow her to provide constituent services for more county residents, she told The Diamondback last month.
Riker told The Diamondback last month that he would prioritize law enforcement shortages and budget concerns across the county.
The general election for the vacant seat will be held on Nov. 5. If Ivey wins the general election, the county will hold another special election next year to fill her District 5 seat.
