2023 was an intense year for everyone in the University of Maryland community. The Diamondback's photographers documented a special election, student vigils and demonstrations, Maryland athletics' biggest moments and, of course, tons of campus construction.
When reflecting on my last four years on The Diamondback’s photo desk, I am consistently proud of how our newsroom’s photographers have overcome new challenges. I believe our ability to tell the campus’ biggest and smallest stories each semester with professionalism and resilience shows the strength of the university community in College Park. I am particularly proud of how The Diamondback’s photographers have handled every assignment with grace and sensitivity. Our photo staff has upheld ethical photojournalism standards while maintaining respect for both our sources and readers.
This year, the photo desk wanted to prioritize getting more photos in front of the campus and College Park community. For each news story, photo editors typically select one photo from 10 that are filed. For sports games and concerts, there can be hundreds of quality photos turned in that haven’t had the opportunity to shine as an article’s cover photo. Therefore, community members only see a fraction of our photographers’ work in each article they read.
The photos included in our 2023 year in review selections exhibit our photographers’ amazing talent. Each member of the photo desk has shown dedication to capturing the emotion behind each story The Diamondback tells. They have shown up, put themselves in unpredictable situations and showcased their creativity on every assignment.
This year in review — as well as our gallery showcasing Maryland football — allows The Diamondback’s photo desk to share its best shots of 2023, in addition to some hidden gems we’ve kept in our vault.
We are honored to present this edition of The Diamondback’s Year in Pictures.
