University of Maryland President Darryll Pines announced award-winning journalist Gayle King will be the 2023 spring commencement speaker in a campuswide email.

King — who graduated from this university in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology — is a broadcast journalist for CBS Mornings, according to the email. The Chevy Chase native is also the editor-at-large for Oprah Daily and hosts Gayle King in the House, a live weekly radio show on SiriusXM.

“I am honored that our graduates will have the opportunity to learn from her journey, spanning from her time as a Terp to becoming an award-winning, world-renowned journalist,” Pines wrote in the email.

King sent in a video to a University Senate meeting of her and her assistant Shelby Copeland — who is also an alum of this university — dressed in university gear to show their “Maryland pride.”

“Now I’m not saying you have to go to Maryland to be my assistant but I will say this, it don’t hurt,” King said in the video.

The commencement will be held at the Maryland Stadium on May 22 at 7 p.m., according to the email.
