Eppley Recreation Center will be closed starting Sunday for at least a week following a spike in COVID-19 cases, according to Friday night RecWell emails obtained by The Diamondback.

The closure, which includes all University Recreation and Wellness operations, is set to end Feb. 27, according to the emails. RecWell facilities could potentially reopen Feb. 28 if the cases normalize, one email read. Eppley is expected to remain open Saturday.

The shutdown is part of the university’s response to rising COVID-19 cases in the university community and is not due to any known outbreaks tied to the gym or associated facilities, according to the email.

The guidance comes from the University of Maryland’s vice president’s office, according to the email. On Thursday, the university announced increased restrictions on gatherings in response to multiple COVID-19 outbreaks in the campus community. On the same day, the university recorded the most daily COVID-19 cases from campus testing this semester.
