President-elect Joe Biden’s emergency coronavirus relief plan includes $1,400 stimulus checks for adult dependents, a group that includes many college students who had been left out of previous economic relief packages.
As the coronavirus pandemic forces many into unemployment and leaves many struggling to make rent, college students are no exception. In fact, researchers at Arizona State University found that 40 percent of college students surveyed had lost a job, internship or job offer in a study published over the summer.
Beyond stimulus checks, Biden’s proposal also expands the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund with $35 billion designed to assist distance learning plans, execute public health protocol and provide emergency grants to students in need. The funds will be allocated to public institutions and community colleges, as well as public and private historically Black universities and colleges, among other institutions.
