Former Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson — who threw for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2017 — will transfer to the Maryland football team, the redshirt sophomore announced on Twitter on Monday night.
The addition pits one more option into the Terps’ 2019 quarterback battle, already featuring Tyrrell Pigrome, 2019 recruit Lance LeGendre and Kasim Hill, who recently entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal.
Jackson is expected to graduate in the spring, allowing him to play immediately for Maryland with two years of eligibility remaining. The dual-threat quarterback visited College Park this weekend, and coach Mike Locksley secured the former 2016 three-star recruit.
After his breakout 2017 campaign, in which he added 324 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, Jackson broke his leg in the third game of his redshirt sophomore season and missed the rest of the slate. He was one of a slew of Hokies to enter the transfer pool this offseason, and the Terps landed wide receiver Sean Savoy in January.
Hill began as Maryland’s starter last year but suffered a torn ACL against Indiana in November, his second in consecutive seasons, which propelled Pigrome to the starter role. The rising junior led the Terps in their final two games, nearly completing an upset over No. 9 Ohio State.
LeGendre — the No. 9-ranked quarterback in the 2019 class — is another dual-threat option that could fit well with Locksley’s scheme, which was prolific this season with Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts under center.
