Maryland football running back Lorenzo Harrison is out for the season with a right knee injury, a team spokesperson confirmed Thursday.
Harrison wrote in an Instagram post that he injured his knee during practice this week.
“Just when I thought I was ready to go, in my first full practice back, God had another plan for me,” Harrison wrote on Instagram. “See [y’all] next season, I promise it will be worth the wait.”
Harrison has missed the past two games with a strained hamstring. The junior practiced in a limited capacity last week and warmed up with the Terps before their game against Minnesota on Saturday, but interim head coach Matt Canada decided not to play him because he was satisfied with the depth he had at running back.
Canada said Harrison “made a great run” during practice before suffering a non-contact injury. He underwent successful surgery Friday morning, Canada said.
“That’s part of the deal with athletics. Sometimes it’s just an interesting, hard situation,” Canada said. “Everything went as well as it could go and they’re feeling very good about where he’ll be as this moves forward.”
In two games this year, Harrison ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He compiled more than 600 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons in College Park after graduating from DeMatha Catholic.
With Harrison sidelined and Jake Funk still recovering from a broken hand, running backs Ty Johnson and Anthony McFarland will likely carry the load, but Tayon Fleet-Davis and Javon Leake may see more carries, too.
McFarland and Johnson have been the primary ball carriers lately. McFarland has rushed for more than 100 yards in consecutive games, and Johnson leads the backfield with 300 yards gained.
Harrison is eligible to redshirt, having appeared in two games this season and not redshirting earlier, which would preserve his final two years of eligibility. Under new NCAA rules, players can participate in up to four games in a season before deciding to redshirt.
