The Maryland women’s soccer team was picked to finish 13th in the Big Ten in the conference’s preseason coaches poll released this week. The Terps have finished at the bottom of the Big Ten each of the past three years.
Goalkeeper Rachel Egyed, junior defender/midfielder Jlon Flippens and senior forward Jarena Harmon were named to the preseason honors list.
Egyed kept the Terps within striking distance nearly every game of her junior season, even as their offense was shut out in the final six contests. Her 71 saves and 1.36 goals against average earned her Third-Team All Big Ten honors.
Flippens netted two goals and three assists last year. Having started 32 of 33 games the past two years, she projects to be a pivotal piece in the middle of the Terps’ defense again as a junior.
Harmon scored 15 goals in her first two college seasons but struggled as a junior in 2017, managing just one goal and one assist and not holding a regular starting job.
Last year, the Terps jumped out to a 6-0-1 start before going 1-8-2 in conference play.
Coach Ray Leone’s squad begins the season at William & Mary on Thursday.
