Is the Maryland women’s lacrosse team bad for lacrosse? The answer is yes.

College Park is home to the most successful women’s lacrosse program in NCAA history, and with the Terps’ dominance in the past 25 years, there are few dynasties that match Maryland across any sport, college or pro.

The only program that’s blown away the competition like Maryland women’s lacrosse is UConn women’s basketball. With the Terps’ 17-15 victory over Navy on Saturday, Maryland earned a trip to the Final Four for the 10th straight season.

Meanwhile, this past season, the UConn women’s basketball team made their 11th straight Final Four, and that’s not the only record the programs have in common.

Since 1995, both Maryland women’s lacrosse and UConn women’s basketball have 11 national championships, which is more than any other program in their sports. Additionally, both teams have had impressive national title streaks as well.

Under head coach Cindy Timchal, the Terps won seven straight national championships from 1995 to 2001.

In comparison, the Huskies have been led by head coach Geno Auriemma and he has also found no shortage of success. UConn rattled off four straight titles from 2013 to 2016 as part of the program’s 11 total championships.

The last time the Terps missed the NCAA tournament was before any of its current players were born, happening way back in 1989. On the other hand, the last time UConn missed the big dance? 1988.

The records and championship numbers are uncanny. Maryland women’s lacrosse has been just as dominant as UConn women’s basketball in recent history, if not more.

The Huskies have been upset in the Final Four the last two seasons, but the Terps are alive and well in their sport’s Final Four this year. Cathy Reese is looking for back-to-back national championships and her fourth title in the last five years.
