Maryland baseball starter Taylor Bloom was hit in the head with a foul ball before the Terps’ Friday matchup with Michigan and is being evaluated for a concussion, a team spokesman said.
Right-hander Mike Vasturia will make the emergency start, and Bloom is unavailable Friday, a team spokesman said.
Bloom was doing band work as the Wolverines took batting practice when an errant ball struck him. Trainer Tyler Cronin was evaluating Bloom pregame.
With weather looking like a potential issue for the series in Ann Arbor, coach Rob Vaughn may have Saturday or Sunday starters Tyler Blohm and Hunter Parsons available for the series-opener.
Parsons left his start last Sunday due to a cramp in his right leg, but Vaughn said expects the junior to be ready for his appearance later this weekend, if the weather permits it.
Bloom struggled in his last outing, allowing 10 runs and five walks in five innings. The senior has a 5.20 ERA.
Vasturia will be making the second start of his career. Against Elon on March 21, he allowed one hit in two scoreless innings as the Terps opted for a bullpen day in the midweek matchup. The redshirt freshman has a 3.21 ERA in 14 innings this season.
