Maryland gymnastics seniors Evelyn Nee and Dominiquea Trotter and junior Amanda Bertorello will take part in the final home quad meet of their careers during Senior Night on Friday.
Nee has competed consistently on bars this season, with a season-high score of 9.8. She’s participated in all but one meet. Trotter and Bertorello, however, haven’t competed at all.
Throughout her collegiate career as a gymnast, Trotter has competed on beam, floor and vault. She posted career highs of 9.825 on vault and beam as a sophomore and 9.8 on floor as a freshman.
Bertorello competed on bars, beam and floor with career-high scores of 9.775, 9.75 and 9.9, respectively. The junior will graduate a year early to begin medical school.
On Friday, the Terps will honor the departing gymnasts for their commitment and positive contributions to the team. The girls will compete at home against Yale, Penn and Temple at their second annual Cystic Fibrosis Purple Meet.
Last week, the Terps won the Pink Invitational, and coach Brett Nelligan hopes they can repeat that performance. The team’s scores on bars (49.25) and floor rotation (49.125) were each their second-highest of the season, with a final score of 195.15. Although the Terps broke a 195, Nelligan wants to see some improvements on vault and beam.
Many of the gymnasts, including freshman Audrey Barber, say the amplitude and final landing on vault need to be improved overall. Barber said it is hard to balance a strong jump height and landing.
“That is what we’ll look to do this weekend,” Nelligan said. “Be a little more comfortable and confident on beam and more focused on our landings on vault.”
