The Sunbury, Ohio, native was included in PrepVolleyball’s top-50 2019 recruits, and she figured to give the Terps a standout setter after making her verbal commitment in June 2016. Maryland averaged 11.88 assists per set last season, the second-fewest in the Big Ten.
After Steve Aird took the head coaching position at Indiana in December, three Maryland players announced they were transferring, including former top-30 recruits Samantha Drechsel and Gia Milana. Podraza’s change of heart on the program could stem from that fallout and the loss of the coach who recruited her.
Podraza plays for Mintonette Sports, the same club program middle blocker Katie Myers competed for. In July, Podraza helped lead her U-16 team to a USA Volleyball Girls Juniors National Championship.
Maryland currently has four setters on its roster, three of whom will be upperclassmen next year. Podraza would have been the highest-touted player of the bunch.
