Maryland men’s basketball made an addition and missed out on a top target for its 2018 recruiting class in recent weeks.
Mississippi State center Schnider Herard announced Saturday he will transfer to Maryland next season. The sophomore played 11 games for the Bulldogs this year before electing to transfer Dec. 31. Herard was the No. 47-ranked player in the class of 2016 and played in all 32 games, earning 19 starts, as a freshman.

Herard should be eligible to play after the fall 2018 semester, helping bolster a frontcourt that will lose Michal Cekovsky and Sean Obi to graduation — and possibly Bruno Fernando to the NBA Draft. Herard will join forward Jalen Smith, the No. 22-ranked player in the class of 2018, according to 247Sports.
Five-star center Moses Brown, who the Terps had been recruiting for more than two years, committed to UCLA Monday. In September, Brown’s father, Malcolm, said Maryland was Brown’s front-runner, according to ZAGSBLOG.

Coach Mark Turgeon has another 2018 option on the board. Four-star point guard Tyger Campbell made his official visit to College Park this month. The No. 65-ranked player, per 247Sports, has also visited Purdue and DePaul. Campbell still has an official visit scheduled to UCLA in late January. Turgeon has two scholarship openings left in his 2018 class.
